Beyond The Guardrail > This sad rose was not doing too good, and still isn't... it's GONE! My tomato grows here now! Even getting little tomatoes on it, already!
Beyond The Guardrail > Ok, so it's just a pile of produce, right? Cucumbers. Pears. Limes. Jicama... or is that jicamas? Tomatoes. Broccoli. An avocado. And one beautiful sweet red pepper. Soooo? What's so special about the things in this photo? Well.... mostly, that they didn't break the bank! And, that I had only to walk to the end of my block and around the corner, to our neighborhood's latest addition..... a 'fruteria', or 'fruit stand'. Early each morning, the young couple who own this small business go to the huge produce distribution center to pick the freshest fruits and veggies for their customers, most of whom shop daily for their family's meals. Sure, we see frozen veggies and fruits in the stores now, but the 'typical' Ama de Casa (homemaker) in Mazatlan does not serve 'frozen' foods to her family..... even in this day of racing around from school activities to the health club to the dentist's and home again to fix mid-day 'comida' and evening 'cena' ..... she still plans ahead and serves freshly-prepared foods at most meals. Not me, of course..... but I'm not above eating leftover pizza for dinner, so what would I know about 'fresh'?! So, just what did I mean by 'didn't break the bank', anyhow? Are you ready? This nice pile of veggies and fruit set me back $24.00.... in PESOS! That's less than $2.40 in USD. How 'bout that for the good life, amigos?!
Beyond The Guardrail > The Cathedral is always so beautiful in the evening light... I thank whoever took this photo!
