Magdalena de Kino is a favorite on our route to and from Mexico. It is situated about 65 miles south of the US/Mexican border crossing at Nogales, in Sonora State. For a small town, there is much to see and do here, and we enjoy our restful stays.

Beyond The Guardrail > Smocks and dresses hand made and embroidered....

Beyond The Guardrail > Around the plazuela are two or three religious supply stores. Here, you can even buy a nearly-full sized 'statue' of Padre Kino, or maybe you'd prefer a statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe

Beyond The Guardrail > I could not resist getting this photo! For those who don't read Spanish..... it says.... This house is Catholic. We don't accept protestant propaganda or from other sects. Christ the King lives! Viva the Virgin of Guadalupe, Mother of God. Yes, I've actually seen signs like this in the windows of some homes!

Beyond The Guardrail > Snack time! Fruit, fruit, fruit..... a wide variety of tropical fruits served just about any way you can imagine, from fruit salads to fruit ice cream. One time, we ordered one 'plate' of fresh fruit with a cup of yougurt, and it was more than the two of us could finish off! Normally, we stop at the Paleterias for a refreshing limonada or jamaica. Limonada is fresh lime juice served with crushed ice. Jugo de jamaica is tea made from the deep red hibiscus flower, sweetened just a bit and served over ice with fresh lime juice. Both are very refreshing!

Beyond The Guardrail > Ever wonder how to make chicharrones? Huh, what's that? Chicharrones.... fried pork rinds. Start with cut up pieces of pig skin, and boil them in their own fat 'til crisp and crunchy. Then, try not to worry about that low-fat diet you're trying to stick to. Go ahead.... try some, they're a favorite snack in Mexico. (I'll pass, thank you!)

Beyond The Guardrail > Look closely. This is a truck wheel with a gas burner mounted in the middle, and that's a galvanized cook pot full of boiling chicharrones sitting on top. Hey, it works great!

What you're NOT seeing here is another favorite treat....... after the chicharrones are taken out of the boiling fat, everything is allowed to settle, the oil is poured off, and what's left are the scraps of pork stuck to the bottom of the kettle. That is scraped off, and..... uuuuummmm, gooood..... spooned on a small tortilla, topped with cheese, and crisped on a grill or griddle, 'Vampiros' are one of my favorite snacks!

Beyond The Guardrail > These two women were making the biggest tortillas I've ever seen!

Beyond The Guardrail > They also didn't care to have their photos taken, and would not look at me. I'm sorry, ladies..... thanks for being patient with me.

Beyond The Guardrail > Motel de Kino entry.... I wanted to show you these small trees. They are Ficus Benjamina, normally found in the states as a house plant. These are young ones, with their trunks loosly woven. As they mature, their trunks will thicken and fill in, and the tree will eventually appear to have a braided truck. Cool!!
