Combate 2010 : Each year, on Saturday night, during Mazatlán's CARNAVAL, the skies over Olas Altas beach explode in the Combate Naval. This ship-to-shore battle, fought in fireworks, commemorates the Battle of Mazatlán in 1864, when a small local force successfully repelled invading troops from a French warship.

Plazuela Machado : Plazuela Machado is considered the heart of Old Mazatlan... Named for the Filipino immigrant who donated the land for the plazuela, Juan Machado, this was, at one time, the commercial center of Mazatlan. Nowadays, the plazuela itself and the 19th-century buildings that line the plaza have been exquisitely restored to their earlier splendor, and the Plazuela Machado has transpired into the cultural center of the city. On any given evening, a stroll along the tree-lined sidewalks skirting the plazuela provides a treat for both eyes and ears. Stop for a few minutes' rest on one of the many park benches along the walkway or choose one of the several cafes and restaurants that line the plazuela, and enjoy local musical offerings with a meal or snack.

Malecón : Stretching from the Golden Zone all the way to old town, and beyond, Mazatlan's ocean-front boardwalk, called the Malecón, is a popular place to take a walk, exercise, and enjoy spectacular ocean views and cool breezes, and to visit some of Mazatlan's many monuments and beachfront restaurants. When we need our 'Ocean' fix, we simply head for the Malecon, to take a walk and watch the waves come rolling in.

Carnavals Past : Carnaval is an official Mexican holiday that kicks off a five-day celebration before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Carnaval is celebrated exuberantly with parades, floats, costumes, music and dancing in the streets. In Mexico, many cities have Carnaval celebrations to various degrees, but the biggest events take place in the port cities, with the largest of all in our home town. Mazatlan's Carnaval is said to attract well over 300,000 people, making it the third largest such event behind Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans.

Port and Bay : Long before foreign tourists 'discovered' Mazatlan, it was a city with a purpose... namely, fishing, shrimping and shipping. For a busy port, I find it always interesting, always bustling and ... at the same time, always tranquil. Here are some of my own photos, and some I've garnered from other sources. Enjoy! My disclaimer.... I've marked a few of the photos in this album as belonging to the Sinaloa Film Commission. All the rest are my own photography. Enjoy!

Today, there's a new RV park, and a strip of locales.... small stores and restaurants.... where once there were only souvenir and beachwear vendors. A few of the original open-air seafood restaurants are stil there, but the 'flavor' of Cerritos Point is forever changed.....

La Taquiza : Chances are, you have no idea what a 'taquiza' is! You're not the only one! Another BKS (best kept secret!) of the Mexican culture, the taquiza is proving to be just what we've been looking for in party planning. For starters, it helps if you know someone who has the reputation of being a great carne asada cook. You contact that person and start negotiating for them to come to your casa with their asador (bbq) and however many kilos of marinated meat needed to feed the hungry gang. Negotiations will also determine if all the food will be provided, or only the meat. It's called a taquiza because the usual food is, of course, the taco, but other dishes can be included as well, and prepared by you and your friends or the 'cocinero', cook. The taquiza starts with the cochera or street in front of your casa being cleaned, then tables and chairs are set out, the asador and cocinero arrive with the meat, and .... well, take a look for yourself....

La Quinceañera : In Mexico, the transistion from childhood to womanhood is observed with the celebration of "La Quinceañera" -- a girl's 15th birthday. The most important element of this celebration is the "Misa de acción de gracias" (thanksgiving Mass), at which the young woman gives thanks for her blessings and receives blessings for a long and happy life in return. The exact origin of Mexico's quinceañera celebration remains unknown, although its roots may well lie in the era of the Aztecs, as it was traditional for the parents of young Aztec maidens to formally acknowledge their daughters' passage into womanhood. As celebrated by these early indigenous peoples, and later adapted by the Spanish Catholics who conquered Mexico, a girl's fifteenth birthday symbolized that she was ready for womanhood and marriage. She would spend time learning her duties, such as cooking, housework, cleaning, and child-rearing. After the fifteenth birthday party a girl was expected to get married. If she did not marry by the time she was sixteen or seventeen, she had the option of becoming a priestess or staying home to take care of her parents. Today's girls still celebrate La Quinceañera as an entrance into becoming responsible women, learning about their religion and culture, and of course, of dating. Regardless of how the tradition originated, the celebration of the quinceañera remains as one of the rites of passage that keeps the bonds of the Mexican family firmly cemented. All the fancy frills and frosting of the celebration are the basis a niña's sweet dreams.
